Construction project development works have been started for the adaptation of the infrastructure of the tram route No. 5 line section to the low-floor tram parameters

Continuing the implementation of the project “Adaptation of the Riga tram infrastructure to the low-floor tram parameters”, an open tender for the development of the construction project and author’s supervision for the adaptation of the tram route No. 5 line section has been closed. SIA “Transportbūvju konsultācijas” with the financial offer of 427 680.00 EUR has been recognized as the winner. The deadline for the construction project development is August 2022.

The project envisages adaptation of the infrastructure of the tram route No. 5 line in the secton from the intersection of Slokas Street and Jūrmalas gatve to the final point “Iļģuciems” – with the total length of the line of approximately 2 kilometers. The design specification includes the following works:

  • reconstruction of the overhead structures with construction of the new supports and reconstruction of the overhead contact system, ensuring movement of trams equipped with both pantograph and overhead line;
  • reconstruction of the low-voltage cables feeding the overhead system and construction of the new cables, with leads to “Rīgas satiksme” substation in 54B Slokas Street and to the connection of electric cables in Jūrmalas gatve;
  • reconstruction of the tram tracks in the section of Slokas Street from Jūrmalas gatve to Pulka Street;
  • construction of the entry - exit platforms and stop platforms in the entire section of the tram route No. 5 from the intersection of Slokas Street and Jūrmalas gatve to the final point “Iļģuciems”.

Implementation of the project “Adaptation of the Riga tram infrastructure to the low-floor tram parameters” will improve the accessibility of the environment for the elderly passengers, passengers with children and people with special needs and will generally increase the number of passengers in the environmentally friendly public transport. It is planned to attract co-financing from the European Union Cohesion Fund to the project.

Apart from that, it has several environment sustainability-related objectives:

  • ensure environmental accessibility for any passenger – elderly passengers, disabled people and parents with baby prams;
  • to increase the number of public transport users who use environmentally friendly public transport;
  • to increase the speed of the tram traffic;
  • to reduce traffic jams;
  • reduce the negative CO2 emission impact on the environment and air quality produced by private cars;
  • improve the experience of travelling with public transport by means of improving the quality of service.
