Adaptation of the Riga tram infrastructure to the low-floor tram parameters

Continuing the implementation of the project “Adaptation of the Riga tram infrastructure to the low-floor tram parameters”, construction project development works have been started for the adaptation of the infrastructure of the tram route No. 5 and No. 7 line sections and the infrastructure at the intersection of 11 November Embankment and 13 January Street.

The project works will improve environmental accessibility for elderly people, passengers with children and people with special needs and in general will contribute to the increase of the number of passengers in environmentally friendly public transport. The project was started in 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. It is planned to attract co-funding from the Eropean Union Cohesion fund to the project.

Works included in the project:

  • Adaptation of the infrastructure of the tram route No. 5 in the section from the intersection of Slokas Street and Jūrmalas gatve to the final point “Iļģuciems” – approximately 2 km in total;
  • Reconstruction and renewal of the infrastructure of the tram route No. 7 in the section from Centrāltirgus Street to the final point "Ķengarags" - approximately 7 km in total;
  • Reconstruction and renewal of the tram infrastructure at the intersection of 11 November Embankment and 13 January Street.5_tram.jpg

Tram route No. 5:

  • Construction, reconstruction and renewal of the energy supply facilities;
  • Reconstruction and renewal of the rail tracks;
  • Construction and reconstruction of the stop platforms.

Tram route No. 7:

  • Construction, reconstruction and renewal of the energy supply facilities;11_13_ielas_krust.jpg
  • Reconstruction and renewal of the rail tracks;
  • Construction and reconstruction of the stop platforms;
  • Installation and adaptation of the traffic light objects to improve the speed of the tram traffic;
  • Measures to improve traffic safety.

  • Reconstruction of the rail tracks, including installation of automated switch control system;
  • Adaptation of the tram catenary constructions;
  • Rain water drainage solutions in the area of the rail track intersection;
  • Construction of the road pavement for heavy traffic load.

The project has several environment sustainability-related objectives, including:

  • reduction of the negative CO2 emission impact on the environment and air quality produced by private cars;
  • reduction of the traffic jams;
  • increase of the speed of the tram traffic;
  • improvement of the experience of travelling in public transport by enhancing the quality of rendered service.

Benefits of the project implementation:

On tram routes No. 5 and No. 7:

  • rebuilt and raised stop platforms with improved accessibility;
  • faster tram movement and safer traffic;
  • lower noise level;
  • more neighbourhoods where low-tram traffic can be ensured.

In the intersection of 11. novembra krastmala and 13. janvāra Street:

  • higher tram traffic safety in the switch area;
  • less time for crossing the intersections, consequently less traffic jams;
  • higher level of comfort when transport vehicles move across the rail track intersections;
  • lower operating costs for pavement maintenance

The implementation of the designing works is planned with attracting co-financing of the European Union Cohesion Fund within the project "Adaptation of the Riga tram infrastructure to the low-floor tram parameters" (No. 4.5.1.1/22/I/001). Total costs of the project are estimated at 55.2 million euro, whereas,  the Cohesion Fund co-financing amounts to 85% of the eligible costs of the project, i.e. 38.78 million euro.
