"Rīgas satiksme" calls on passengers: Press the button and open the doors yourself!

"Rīgas satiksme" is gradually introducing a system which provides that passengers who want to get on or off public transport have to press special buttons to open public transport doors. The new buttons are available in all public transport vehicles of new type. To implement this system, today, September 19, "Rīgas satiksme" is launching information campaign "Press the button and open the doors yourself!", during which passengers in public transport and at public transport stops will be informed about the new system and its advantages.

The new system is being introduced to make public transport more comfortable. Given the short distances between public transport stops in Riga, the public transport stops frequently. To avoid unnecessary opening of the doors, which leads to losses of hot air in winter and of cold air in summer, passengers can regulate the door opening process themselves, thus maintaining a comfortable temperature inside the vehicle. For passengers to be able to identify the vehicles where the new system has been introduced, there will be special stickers "Nospied pogu un atver durvis pats!" at the doors. The information materials will be also gradually placed at public transport stops.

The new door opening system is being introduced gradually. "Rīgas satiksme" has informed all the drivers about the new system in advance and call on drivers to understand the situations, when passengers do not use automatic door opening buttons and help them to open the doors in a centralized mode.

Out from 889 public transport vehicles, which carry almost 0.5 M passengers every day, 587 (66% of the total amount) are already equipped with special door opening buttons. The button does not function when the vehicle is moving/is not at a public transport stop, but opens the door automatically at the following stop, which enables passengers to get on and off quickly.

In the first eight months of 2013 "Rīgas satiksme" has already received 298 complaints from passengers that it is too cold in the public transport and 170 complaints that it is too hot. "Rīgas satiksme" hopes that the new system will increase passengers’ comfort and reduce the inconveniences they experienced before.

It should be added that such a system has been operating for more than two years in low floor trams, where passengers gladly use the advantages of the system. Moreover, "Rīgas satiksme" has not received any complains from passengers regarding the usage of door opening buttons.
