“Rīgas satiksme” will redistribute resources to increase traffic intensity of individual routes
In response to the changes planned by the government for the purpose of improving epidemiological situation, “Rīgas satiksme” has prepared and submitted to the Riga City Council several proposals for providing public transport in Riga, which are due to be implemented starting from March 15. As Džineta Innusa, Chairman of the Board of “Rīgas satiksme” explained: “We have undertaken careful analysis of the passenger flow and looked for new and effective ways to improve passenger comfort with existing company resources. We have planned that starting from March 15 in several routes we will increase the number of trips in the busiest morning and evening hours, by reducing trip intervals, which will allow to provide transport with 12-meter-long busses, whereas the 18-meter busses will be redirected to other routes to increase possibilities for distancing. In order to decrease passenger flow in the bus route No 3 in the busiest section, it is planned to create a temporary parallel bus route - 3A. In the busiest morning hours, the bus No 3A will run in the route “Daugavgrīva – Brīvības boulevard”, and in the evenings – in the route “Freedom Monument – Daugavgrīva”. A new solution of the company envisages that long trolleybuses will run in the bus routes No 1 and No 5. An order signed by the Executive Director of the Riga City Council is required for the changes to take effects.
It is planned, that starting from March 15, in the morning and evening hours the trip interval will be reduced and changes will be made to the weekday traffic schedules in the following bus routes:
- Bus route No 6;
- Bus route No 25;
- Bus route No 36;
- Bus route No 44;
- Bus route No 46;
- Bus route No 53;
- Trolleybus route No 4;
- Trolleybus route No 15.
In order to ensure coordination of departure time, it is planned to make changes, starting from March 15, in individual departure times of bus routes No 3 and 30 and trolleybus route No 19.
Starting from March 15 for the duration of the emergency situation it is planned to create a new temporary bus route No 3A, which will run in the route “Daugavgrīva – Brīvības boulevard” in the busiest morning hours and in the evening – in the route “Brīvības boulevard – Daugavgrīva”, thus relieving the bus route No 3 (see picture). The passengers who have purchased monthly tickets for the bus route No 3 will be able to use it in the new route as well by registering the trip.
A new solution of the company envisages that long trolleybuses will run in the bus routes No 1 and No 5. The passengers who use these routes and have purchased monthly ticket will be able to use it as well.
“Rīgas satiksme” maintains continuous monitoring of the usage of public transport by its passengers, and this procedure is going to remain unchanged. Occupancy data is reported by public transport drivers and gathered from commuter applications. Apart from that, the newest vehicles of “Rīgas satiksme” are fitted with automatic passenger counting systems, which transmit a signal to the traffic operator, allowing prompt reaction and allocation of extra vehicles.
Mitigating the risk of COVID-19 propagation requires the involvement of each individual, so it is vital for everyone to minimize social contacts and refrain from using public transport during the emergency unless this is absolutely necessary.
