Bicycles allowed to be carried without restriction in public transport

Today, on April 23, the board of "Rīgas satiksme" decided to allow carrying bicycles in Riga public transport without restrictions, thus cancelling the previous requirement that bicycles must be packed. The decision has been already conceptually approved by the Riga City Council Committee for Traffic and Transport Affairs. The decision comes into effect at the moment of being taken.

The chairman of the committee, Vadims Baraņņiks, emphasises that the decision was taken considering the recommendations of cyclists’ organizations: "Everybody understands that it applies to some specific cases, when a cyclist cannot continue his or her way riding a bicycle."

When carrying a bicycle, a passenger has to abide by the requirements of Riga City Council’s regulations on the use of urban public transport: a bicycle cannot cause inconveniences and injuries to other passengers, as well as damage the public transport vehicle. A passenger has also to prevent the bicycle from rolling, falling or toppling inside a moving public transport vehicle.

The civil liability for causing possible damage to the property of "Rīgas satiksme" and passengers will be borne by bicycle owners.  "Rīgas satiksme" reminds that no additional tickets are required to be bought for carrying bicycles in public transport.
