Information about Skanste tram line
Project “Development of Tram Infrastructure in Riga”, No. 4.5.1.1/16/I/002”
Agreement with the Central Finance and Contracting Agency – signed on October 3, 2017.
Goal
Project “Development of Tram Infrastructure” aims to further the sustainable use of public transport in Riga by integrating developing neighbourhoods of the city that are less connected into the public transport network.
Sub-goals
- to increase the number of people who use environment friendly public transport;
- to reduce negative impact on the environment and air quality;
- to reduce the duration of trips in public transport (for both vehicles and passengers), without deteriorating traffic conditions;
- to reduce the number of traffic jams and accidents;
- to improve the experience of using public transport by raising quality standards.
Scheduled measures
- building of a new tram infrastructure section – 3.6 km;
- reconstruction of tram infrastructure section ~ 3 km;
- purchase of 12 low-floor trams;
- building of a new sub-station, reconstruction of an existing substation and building of an overhead contact network and its power supply cable network;
- building of approximately 11 new tram stops;
- in some places – reconstruction of streets, building of local carriageways, transfer of engineering communications, creation of a traffic management system etc.
Why Skanste?
- an open neighbourhood, which is the nearest to Riga’s historic
- Skanste will further international competiveness of Riga, it is expected that this neighbourhood will grow into Riga’s central business area and financial centre;
- more than 40 000 jobs;
- a consecutive connecting element of green axis in the neighbourhood. Its main elements may consist of green plantations along streets, parks, garden square, plantations in yards;
- clever development of the neighbourhood and its proximity to Riga’s historic centre will further the development of quality dwelling projects;
- more than 28 000 residents in 2030.
Benefits
- The tram is the backbone of the city’s public transport system, the implementation of the project will increase the number of passengers in trams;
- The building of the Skanste tram line will create a tram circle around the historic centre of Riga;
- it will open up opportunities for building new routes, which, bypassing the city centre via Skanste, will reduce public transport flow, by unloading K.Barona Street, will create preconditions for further construction of tram lines in the direction of Purvciems and Pļavnieki;
- the new low-floor trams which will replace the buses now serving the neighbourhood of Skanste will be environment friendly;
- visitors of Skanste district will prefer public transport to private cars;
- accessible infrastructure for everybody – low-floor trams and adjusted stops make it easy-to-access for everybody.
