Park-meters start accepting payment cards

Today "Rīgas satiksme" has unveiled five new park-meters accepting payment cards. The first five new park-meters are available at Kr.Barona Street 94a, Merķeļa Street 13, Raiņa Boulevard 29, E.Birznieka-Upīša Street 21 and Dzirnavu Street 46.

Vadims Baraņņiks, chairman of Riga City Council’s Committee for Traffic and Transport Affairs: „The introduction of park-meters for non-cash payments will certainly make the everyday life of car drivers easier, because now paying for parking services will be much more convenient. Rīgas satiksme, in turn, will be able to save on those unfair drivers who use invalid coins, as well as on vandals who break and rob park-meters. This year we will introduce about 100 such new park-meters, but all the remaining ones will be replaced next year.”

The first five park-meters have been introduced as part of a pilot project being implemented by Rīgas satiksme. After evaluating demand for and functionality of the new park-meters, Rīgas satiksme will decide whether the introduction of such park-meters will be continued in Riga parking-lots.

Rīgas satiksme informs that the new park-meters will only accept bank payment cards, yet other park-meters will accept cash payments, as before. Clients can also pay for parking services by bank transfer or SMS. Rīgas satiksme manages 4819 pay parking-lots of Riga municipality, which account for 253 electronic park-meters.
