Rafter celebration in the new building of tram depot
On Tuesday, 18 February, the tram depot 5 held a rafter celebration – the contractor has completed the assembly of the supporting structures of the tram maintenance building, continuing with the finishing, utilities and furnishing works, as well as the restoration of the historic building.
“The depot redevelopment is an important step not only for the company, but also for the development of Riga’s public transport. The rafter celebration symbolises that we have reached the stage of construction works where the new structures are taking shape and the depot will soon turn into a modern, technologically advanced tram maintenance complex,” said Džineta Innusa, Chairperson of the Board of Rīgas satiksme, at the rafter celebration event.
However, Member of the Board of Rīgas satiksme, Jānis Golubevs, says: “At the moment, about 50% of all works have been completed. Work is actively continuing on the roof structures, tracks and heating networks, as well as on the landscaping to ensure a modern and functional tram depot infrastructure. We are pleased with the progress so far and believe that construction is progressing well and according to plan. Construction is proceeding in stages and a number of important works have already been completed, including the construction of the foundations and steel structures, as well as major assemblies of the intermediate coverings and masonry walls. We continue to focus on the next stages, ensuring the highest quality standards and meeting the set deadlines – to complete the depot early next year.”
- Building A: Concrete pouring of the intermediate coverings is complete and the masonry walls are about 83% complete. We are currently working on the roof structures and ventilation networks. After that, roofing, ventilation, sewerage and heating networks will be built, and track construction, currently 38% complete, will continue.
- Building B: Foundation and repair channel concreting has been completed, as well as the assembly of the steel frame structures (97%). Currently, concrete is being placed for the intermediate coverings and the roof structures are being constructed. The construction of masonry walls will continue and the sewerage and heating networks will be rebuilt. Work will then concentrate on track construction and floor preparation.
- Building C: Concreting of foundations and steel structures and construction of masonry walls have been completed (96%). Work will continue on the roofing and track construction, as well as on the ventilation networks and the installation of the heating and electricity networks. Then, the finishing of the walls and the installation of the heating networks will follow.
- Site works: 95% of the dismantling works on the existing buildings have been completed and 72% of the facade restoration works have been carried out. Soon, the installation of track switches will start, as well as track construction works. This will be followed by the construction of the sewerage and electricity networks.
It should be noted that on 10 June last year, a message and memorials to the future employees of Rīgas satiksme were laid in the foundations of the new building. The total
cost of the new building and the reconstruction of the historic building is approximately EUR 32 million.
The construction design of the tram depot 5 building is done by Rūpnīcprojekts AS, the construction supervision is carried out by SIA Geo Consultants. The contractor awarded the public procurement procedure is SIA Aimasa and the contract for the works was signed on 21 September 2023. Construction is progressing according to the planned construction schedule and is expected to be completed early next year.
