Riga municipality to allow carrying bicycles in public transport free of charge and without restrictions

In the nearest future Riga municipality will allow bicycles to be carried in the city public transport free of charge and without restrictions.

Following the proposal of municipal company "Rīgas satiksme", the Communication and Transport Committee of Riga City Council will consider amendments to the Passenger Transportation Regulations, which will allow bicycles to be carried in public transport without restrictions.

"When discussing the transportation of bicycles with specialists of „Rīgas satiksme”, we came to conclusion that putting special bike carriers outside public transport vehicles is too expensive and these devices are not convenient for use. Having considered all possible options, we have decided to allow carrying bicycles in pubic transport without restrictions," said Riga City Council Chairman Nils Ušakovs.

"We know from our experience that bicycles are carried in public transport only when something extraordinary happens a technical problem or something like that, therefore this decision will not cause inconveniences to other passengers," he noted.

As is known, now only specially packed bicycles are allowed to be carried in public transport. The amendments will cancel this restriction.

It shall be reminded that luggage can be carried for free in Riga public transport already now.
