Route 11 tram to Mežaparks to be restored before the Song and Dance Festival
Today, 9 June, the Riga City Council Commission for Licensing Commercial Transportation of Passengers approved the renewal of the tram 11 schedule and route from 20 June. The decision will allow Rīgas satiksme to continue the restoration works of the currently closed tram route and ensure that participants and visitors of the XXVII Nationwide Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival can get to Mežaparks, where rehearsals and concerts will take place for almost two weeks. The currently approved schedule for the route Stacijas laukums–Mežaparks foresees that on weekdays route 11 trams will run at intervals of 8-10 minutes during the morning and evening hours, as then the number of passengers is highest, making 176 trips, while on weekends the trams will run at intervals of 11-13 minutes, making 144 trips.
As previously reported, route 11 tram was closed on 18 July last year due to the construction works of the Brasa bridge, and during this period Rīgas satiksme organises passenger transportation with route 11T buses. Based on the decision of the Riga City Council Commission for Licensing Commercial Transportation of Passengers adopted today, the company plans to restore route 11 tram from Tuesday, 20 June, and close route 11T bus.
Only low-floor trams will be assigned to route 11 tram, therefore, old type wagons will also be used on some of route 1 tram trips.
Rīgas satiksme is preparing for the restoration of tram 11 and is carrying out various works related to the tram infrastructure, e.g., the track section from Brasa bridge to Mežaparks is being renovated, the track bed, track grooves are being cleaned and the track is being sanded. Also, the installation of a tram overhead contact line on the Brasa overpass is in progress and is planned to be completed by the time of the restoration of route 11 tram operation.
To ensure comfortable and safe tram journeys, intensive track construction works are taking place on several tram routes. As the construction works on Aspazijas bulvāris, from K. Barona iela to Teātra iela, have not yet been completed, route 11 trams will initially run Stacijas laukums–Mežaparks. The construction works are planned to be completed soon and route 11 tram will run to Ausekļa iela.
