Students of vocational training institutions and disabled persons of group 3 will be able to use public transport free of charge as of March 16

Students of vocational training institutions and disabled persons of group 3 will be able to use Riga public transport free of charge starting from this Saturday, March 16. As is known, Riga city council approved changes in the local government’s binding regulations on February 19, this year.

Disabled persons of group 3 with impaired vision and hearing already enjoy    100% fare discount in public transport granted by Riga City Council, but students of vocational training institutions could buy one-month ticket at reduced prices. As for pupils of Riga comprehensive schools, they already use Riga public transport free of charge.

„The municipality keeps its earlier promise not to forget about other disabled persons of group 3 and pupils of vocational training institutions, depending on the financial situation, in order to eliminate the differences inside these categories of passengers. It should be reminded that the state has not allocated even a santims to support disabled persons of group 3 and students of vocational training institutions,” Vadims Baraņņiks, chairman of the Riga City Council Committee for Communication and Transport said.

„Rīgas satiksme” has approved the procedure, according to which students of Riga vocational training schools and disabled persons of group 3 can receive the benefit granted by Riga City Council and use public transport free of charge.

Starting from the day when the regulations take effect, i.e. from March 16 and till April 30, students of vocational training institutions and disabled persons of group 3 will be able to use public transport free of charge upon presenting a valid certificate of student of a vocational training institution or disabled person of group 3.

To use public transport free of charge, disabled persons of group 3 have to take their personalised e-tickets, disabled person’s certificates and identity documents (passport or driver’s licence) and visit one of Rīgas satiksme customer service centres, which are located at Brīvības Street 191, Prāgas Street 1, Spīķeru Street 1, Brīvības Street 384b, Vienības gatve 76b, Kurzemes Avenue 137. Most of the customer service centres  are open from 9.00 till 19.00 on workdays and from 10.00 till 16.00 on Saturdays. The customer service centre at Spīķeru Street 1 is open also on Sundays from 10.00 till 16.00, but that of Brīvības Street 49/53 is open from 8.00 till 19.00 on workdays and from 10.00 till 15.00 on Saturdays. In the customer service centres, a zero tariff ticket will be loaded onto the personalised e-tickets of these categories of customers, and they will start using the discount once it takes effect.

In these days the mobile customer service centres of Rīgas satiksme are visiting vocational training institutions, in which the zero tariff ticket will be loaded onto student’s e-tickets (more information will be available at vocational training institutions). In case the 100% discount was not loaded onto the student’s e-ticket, he/she has to visit one of the above customer service centres, taking with him/her an identity document or a certificate issued by the vocational training institution (these documents have to certify that the student is receiving basic vocational education, professional education or professional secondary education).

Those students of vocational training institutions and disabled persons of group 3 who have not received their personalised e-tickets as yet, have to take their identity documents and documents certifying their status and visit one of Rīgas satiksme customer service centres, where they will be given personalised e-tickets.

Rīgas satiksme urges customers to visit the customer service centres in time. Students of professional training institutions and disabled persons of group 3 will be able to reclaim money for the unused tickets at Rīgas satiksme customer service centres within 12 months after presenting their personalised e-ticket and identity documents.
